El Bajondillo is a former fishing village located north-east of the city centre. On either side of the Punta de Torremolinos lie the two oldest neighbourhoods in the municipality: La Carihuela to the south, El Bajondillo to the north.

History & origins

In the early 20th century, the village had little more than sixty residents, with traditional fishing remaining the main economic activity. From the 1950s and 1960s onwards, the neighbourhood changed radically, moving away from primary activities in favour of hotels and restaurants.

Heritage & architecture

The El Bajondillo cave documents human occupation as far back as the Stone Age, a rare and notable fact with no equally ancient equivalent identified in Torremolinos's other neighbourhoods. Like La Carihuela, El Bajondillo is a former fishing neighbourhood that predates the tourism boom.

Culture & living traditions

Torremolinos's city hub guide describes El Bajondillo as "an emblem of Torremolinos, one of its main areas". The economic shift of the 1950s and 1960s marked the move from a fishing economy to a service economy.
