Zaidín, Granada's most populous neighbourhood, between two rivers.

Born around seventy years ago as a working-class neighbourhood, Zaidín (or Zaidín-Vergeles) is today Granada's most populous neighbourhood. Away from the tourist trail, it's home to modern facilities such as the Los Cármenes stadium.

Residential streets of the Zaidín

The name "Zaidín" is thought to come from the Arabic term "Saedín", translated as "arm of water" or "land between the rivers": the neighbourhood sits between the Genil and the Monachil. It was born around seventy years ago as a working-class neighbourhood.

History & origins

In the 1950s, the capital's expansion pushed beyond the Genil river, into the area then known as "Saedín"; around what is now Plaza de las Palomas, more than 300 homes were built from 1953 onwards. Also known as Zaidín-Vergeles, it brings together former separate neighbourhoods: Casillas Bajas, Santa Adela, Vergeles, Madrigales, Ciudad Jardín and other areas.

Heritage & architecture

Unlike the neighbourhoods of the historic centre, the Zaidín has no identified listed monument; its identity rests on contemporary facilities: the Nuevo Estadio Los Cármenes (home of Granada Club de Fútbol), the Palacio de Deportes and the Campus de la Salud.

Culture & living traditions

The Zaidín is presented as Granada's most populous neighbourhood.
